A Japanese Girl in Spain: Interview with Kamieda Emika (former NMB48) (Part 2)

You might already know of Kamieda Emika if you followed the 48Groups, even from afar. If you don’t, Kamieda Emika is a former member of famous Osaka-based idol group NMB48. She now lives in Barcelona, Spain, and happily accepted to meet us over her latest trip to Japan. Here is the second part of this exclusive interview!

You are rather known by foreign fans of the 48 groups because you can speak English and Spanish. Since when did you have an interest towards these two languages? Where did it come from?

Before entering NMB48, I went to Australia during my first year in high school and even if I didn’t speak English at all, it was such a fun trip. I wanted to take part into the group’s community management so my interest for the English language definitely increased. During my third year in high school, I had to choose my future university but since I had just entered NMB48 I was so busy I didn’t have the time to study at all… At university however, it is possible to take a junior high English level test so I thought it was my chance to get back on track with English and took it. I took Spanish as a second language at university but with my schedule as a NMB48 member, I didn’t attend any class and was not able to speak it. Today I can, because I moved out to Spain but at the beginning it was impossible! (laughs)

Wasn’t it hard to learn two languages at the same time? In terms of workload, specifically.

I could do my homework when I had a bit of free time so I did what I could but to not attend classes is frowned upon in university. We can do our homework and have good grades, but if we don’t attend class we can’t obtain enough credits to valid the year. My attendance was the main issue and the most difficult to handle.

You had a 6-months break in your idol activities in order to study English abroad in Australia and Spanish in Spain. Did you travel overseas while younger?

It was not a university school trip, I made this decision to be on a hiatus during my idol days because I wanted to get all the required university credits that I couldn’t get before due to my poor attendance record. During those 6 months I could go to class, took the test, got the university credits I needed and went to Australia for one month to speak English to practice. When I went to Australia during high school, I couldn’t speak English but this time I had more opportunities to speak. I managed to keep in touch with my local acquaintances, they were all admirative that I got a lot better at English so my confidence got also boosted up. It was such a good experience and I am happy that I went for it!
I also went to Spain but it was just a regular trip rather than a school trip. When I think about it, maybe it influenced the fact that I live there now. At first, I wanted to go to the UK but several reasons, such as the weather or the food that doesn’t necessarily fit Japanese people, made me go back on my decision. Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world so I thought if I could speak English, Japanese and Spanish, I would have more opportunities as an actress.

What cultural differences did you notice during these two short stays?

Now that I live in Spain, I notice a lot of them, yes. In Japan, time management is very important, you can’t neglect it. Trains are always on time by the minute, for example. In Spain, people are more relaxed and take more time to do things. For example if we have class at 4pm, the classroom may not be open yet at this hour or we don’t know at what time we will be able to go home. When our agenda was not clear and that I could go back home early, I didn’t necessarily go home (laughs). It shook up many things about my own time management (laughs). In Japan, we live at a high speed rate and we are used to run after the time but in Spain I became more chill regardless of the situation. It’s so funny!

Is it true that many people take a nap in Spain?

Not so many people who does take naps in Spain nowadays. It is more elderly people who still do it and during that nap time, several shops are closed.

Did you manage to make some friends?

More and more, yes! In order to get better at Spanish, I’m going to a language school and I was able to meet many Spanish people and foreigners over there while making friends with some of them. My Spanish was limited so it was difficult, even with English I didn’t understand quite well… When I wanted to say something, it took me a longer time. I’m shy but I want to make more friends from now on!

Are your friends aware of your past as an idol?

People often ask me “Why do you have so many followers?” (laughs). In this situation, I tell them about it but since many of them are not familiar with the idol culture, they often reply “Oh, okay” (laughs)

People must ask you “Can you sing?” often, right?

When I get ask “Can you show us how you sing?” I often reply “Hum, not now…” (laughs). I like dancing better than singing but that does mean I’m a professional dancer. It’s a bit confusing because I’m currently an actress… It’s one the reason why I want the idol culture to be better known.

Did these two trips have an influence on your departure from the group the following year?

During that time, I didn’t think about it. It’s not because of those trips that I decided to stop but these experiences opened me some gates, yes.

That’s right. What were your reasons, then?

We don’t say it but the Japanese idol career is a concept aimed towards young girls… there are very few idols who are 30 and over. I never wanted to be an idol all my life. I wanted to become an actress and to get in NMB48 was a step towards that goal… So I always thought to myself that I would leave the group one day and I think that’s a thought every idol has had at some point.

You were popular among foreign fans of the 48 franchise, did these fans come to see you during handshake events?

Of course! A lot of them came to see me during handshake events. It was mostly in my lane that fans could speak English, it was so funny! (laughs)

Do you have memories of it?

Yes! Compared to Japanese fans, foreign fans are little in numbers to come to see us so we remember them more easily.

Would you like to keep in touch with your fans from your time in NMB48?

Yes of course! I really want to keep in touch especially through social media like Twitter, Youtube and Instagram. So I update them regularly for that matter. When I come back to Japan, I set up events where I can be close to my fans in order to talk with them, it feels essential to me. I’m not able to have those events in Spain so I try and participate in every event linked to the Japanese culture. If I ever get invited, I would definitely go to these events!

Were some of these fans there during the events you participated to in Spain?

Yes there were some! Also NMB48 fans. Whether in Spain or in Japan, some people knew me. During the events I went to, I saw NMB48 T-shirts, scarves, towels and people came to me saying that they went to a group event in Osaka. When they ask me for a picture, I can see they are super nervous because their hands are shaking. But that makes me happy that, despite the distance between them and Japan, they know the group and wanted to meet me.

Now that you live overseas, did your point of view about Japanese idols change? If yes, how?

No, my perception didn’t change. As I was myself an idol, I know how to behave, but Spanish people I met have a rather different image of that culture. The difference of interest and the long distance make that they don’t necessarily perceive the good side of it. For example, it is difficult to buy and to download Japanese music overseas and sometimes, you can’t even watch music videos on Youtube… J-Pop culture can’t take off and be better known to the world because of such things. It’s that state of mind I have now while in Spain. My perception about the idol culture didn’t change, however my perception about how to communicate around it definitely did.

You helped organizing AKB48’s appearance at Manga Barcelona’s latest edition. Did you ever asked for or participated in that kind of organization?

I only helped in the making. For the last past years, I had many occasions to introduce and explain the idol phenomenon as well as “workshops” and short dancing and singing classes. So for the festival’s 25th anniversary I wanted to do something more ambitious. I have some contacts within the management of the 48 Groups so I talked with the former NMB48 manager also with AKS and the negotiations ended up a success.

Would you like that more idols, from the 48 franchise in particular, come to Europe?

I would like more idol groups coming to Europe. Better, I would like the J-Pop culture to know the same international development as the K-Pop culture… and from a 100% positive perspective, I would find it really interesting to have an idol group entirely composed of Spanish members one day.

Do you think that AKB48 coming to Barcelona is an open gate towards more events outside Asia?

Yes! This experience definitely made me want to see them perform in other foreign countries!

Did you hear anything about an opening towards overseas when you were in NMB48?

I wasn’t there but members of the group indeed went overseas to shoot music videos. In my opinion, NMB48 doesn’t have the image of a group who wants to perform overseas. They can leave Japan for photoshoots or filming but that’s it. I don’t recall any approach to go in another country because the group is already busy in Japan. To move around overseas seems more tiring as well. That said, I do think the group has the capability to do it.

In a Instagram post, you voiced the idea to create a 48 group in Barcelona, it is one of your wishes? Do you think it could be possible despite the important cultural differences?

A 48group, I don’t know because I’m not a producer (laughs). However I think this could be an interesting experience. Of course there’s a big risk that they won’t become famous at all. In Spain, there are either people who don’t know anything about idols, or the fans that support them at 100%. If we gather these fans who are at 100% behind the group, it would boost their popularity and promote the concept better. The simple fact of having a group like this could change the perception of European people on J-Pop and Japanese idols for example.

After your departure from NMB48, you made the choice to live in Barcelona. It’s an important lifetime decision, where did it come from?

I studied abroad, that’s all. As I talked about it earlier, I wanted to go to England but Spain seemed much easier to approach for me because I had studied a little Spanish for example. And I chose Barcelona because I really had a good image of the city. I like the atmosphere, the sea nearby and the ambient temperature which greatly facilitates daily life. I don’t know if I’ll move out anywhere else in the future though.

Tell us about your life in Spain. Did you adapt easily to this new lifestyle and to the cultural differences?

It clearly took me a while to get used to it but I did. I admit that there are many differences between the two countries that changes the daily life and I tried to understand them. Now, I have accepted both lifestyles despite all the differences they involve. As soon as something new presents itself to me, I just think “Let’s try!” and I go for it. But yes, at the beginning there were so many behaviors or things that I didn’t understand that I was worried about my ability to adapt…

Are there some aspects of the Japanese life that you miss on a daily basis?

Mostly my family and friends. To speak Japanese as well (laughs). I have very good friends in Spain however it’s clearly not the same feeling. I also miss Japanese food even if there are Japanese restaurants in Barcelona. It’s still a bit different. When I go back to Japan, one of the first thing I do is going to the konbini! (laughs) When I return to Osaka, I feel at home and safe. While in Barcelona we have to be careful all the time about valuables for example (laughs)

How did your family react when you told them about you moving out to Spain?

At the very beginning, my mother straight up refused. Originally I was supposed to go to England, just when terrorist attacks had just happened, and right after I decided to go to Spain, attacks also took place. However, I had already bought my plane tickets so I decided to go anyway. I talked a lot about it with her and even if I don’t remember if she verbally encouraged me, she agreed that it was the right time for me to leave. My father didn’t talk much about this, but this decision made him want to come and see me in Spain. We were finally able to make this trip together (laughs). So even if they are still worried, I think their opinion has somewhat changed.

What are your activities now you are going back and forth between Spain and Japan? You are a model and a actress, right?

Yes that’s right. For about a year now I have been in a Spanish agency (La Centrale) where I get to be active, and as I go back to Japan once or twice a year, I am also in a Japanese agency but it’s only the beginning. It hasn’t been released yet but I’m starring in a Spanish commercial and I’m also a model and professional dancer in Spain. I try to do a lot of different things. I also became a dance teacher! I only have one class per week but I really got attached to my class, of course only composed of Spanish people. In Japan I am active in plays and actress in Japanese tv shows. I also organize and participate in small events! All my activities revolve around acting. I also organized a birthday event this year. If the timing allows, I’d like to organize more in the future as it’s always a great time with my fans.

You recently released a photobook, how did you get that opportunity?

In Spain I got to meet a lot of different photographers and did several photo shoots. When I had the opportunity I posted them on Instagram and my fans were delighted! Many asked me to release a photobook so I participated in an event on the Showroom app where if we collected enough points, we could produce a photobook. I won this event and I was therefore able to release it. I collected the most beautiful photos I had posted on Instagram!

Can we still buy it?

Of course! It is available on the internet.

You also have a Youtube channel. Can you introduce it?

I launched my channel only recently so there’s no much content yet but to be honest, I was not interested to get into this at the beginning. But in Spain I lived through so many stories that I wanted to introduce them to my followers and I thought Youtube was the appropriate media to do that, after all. Hence, I went for it. Similarly, when I’m in Japan like today, the urge to make discovery videos about Japan for foreigners invades me. I’m more and more comfortable with video editing tools so please subscribe! I’m also waiting for your video suggestions!
